Abstract

From a simple idea came a library network that only ever wanted to connect Marylanders to their libraries and the resources they offered. What SailorSM has become is a national model for public libraries and states planning telecommunications networks and library systems integration. Policies for network development of hardware and software, as well as content, are essential. Summarizes the design and implementation of a small, but critical, part of SailorSM that of collection development of Internet resources.

Abstract

Since digital content can be perfectly replicated and distributed infinitely, publishers and other content originators are employing DRM and persistent protection to prevent the abuse of their intellectual property. However, locking the content and controlling operations on the content have presented interesting challenges in supporting fair use in the digital world. Not only are libraries purchasing intellectual property, but they are also producing and maintaining it. Libraries are publishers. Presents the core components of DRM and the value the technology presents for libraries, and also scenarios to demonstrate where DRM may have improved content delivery to libraries, where library operations may be improved by the use of DRM, and offers critical information against which to ask publishers and content aggregators about their use of DRM with the content they sell to libraries.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to determine the scope of library revenue redistribution to salary expenditures from other operating expenditures.

Design/methodology/approach

Existing US regional and national library data sources (1982‐2003) were reviewed to assess the impact of salary expenditures on other operating expenditures and the impact of retirement on planning.

Findings

The study found that the salaries of the case study library are keeping pace with national averages, but have significantly impacted other operating expenditures due to MLS retention. Retirement rates in the case study are slightly ahead of national estimates and provide some insight into practical needs for LIS graduates.

Originality/value

The article demonstrates the use of existing data sources as planning tools to assess library salaries' overall operating expenditures, and to project professional staff levels.

Abstract

The Marquis de Sade wrote that people behave differently in separate spaces and that, in different environments, they more easily reveal their true predilections. Throughout de Sade's writings, he reveals ways that hidden rooms, closets, castles, brothels, and monasteries can be used as spaces to unleash inner evil. Conveyed within de Sade's writings are ways in which characters actively change their settings in order to create these heterotopias – or spaces that are separate from normal routines. The role that separate spaces play in maintaining alternative behaviors has not been adequately examined in either de Sade's writings or in heterotopia literature. The purpose of this chapter is to explore the inner workings of a heterotopia frozen in time and space – a small town family business. This query merits exploration because the incestuous, atemporal behaviors that de Sade enacted can manifest themselves in family businesses. To examine this facet of family business, a customized methodology will be introduced – the Sadean duography. This manuscript is beneficial to practitioners in family businesses who seek to understand the hazards of inherting or purchasing new businesses, and to scholars in entrepreneurship and organizational studies seeking a deeper understanding of the role of heterotopias, also known as third spaces.

Abstract

The case puts students in the shoes of Todd Davis, founder and CEO of a boutique brownfield redevelopment firm, Hemisphere Development, in 2010. Davis is wrestling with decisions and processes surrounding the potential acquisition and redevelopment of the former Delphi Automotive plant in Columbus, Ohio. When making the investment decision, Davis (and students) must consider various factors: What is Hemisphere's implicit investment strategy, and what are the firm's core competencies? How should the firm finance this transaction to achieve an acceptable return?

  • Practice creatively structuring and financing unique transactions

  • Describe the importance of baseline analysis in dealing with contaminated or potentially contaminated properties, and understand that the timing of baseline analysis can be crucial in determining the viability of a transaction

  • State the importance of each type of constituent in public-private transactions

  • Recognize the benefits of specialized/niche expertise in deal-makin

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this annotated bibliography is to show perspectives on intellectual freedom from literature that provides approaches for librarians in faith-based institutions. The articles reviewed in this annotated bibliography will assist both Christian and secular librarians in selecting library materials.

Design/methodology/approach

The author identified sources using LISTA, ATLA and other common library databases. Sources were selected from 1993 to the present, focusing on sources that are on the application of intellectual freedom in the Christian academic library and/or librarian.

Findings

Best (2010) discusses censorship in academic libraries based on the top ten most-challenged books in 2007 which have research implications for Christian institutions. Johnson (2002), Davis (2002) and Smith (2004) offer library recommendations based on the review of the literature and their own practice. Hippenhammer (1993/1994) presents survey data and findings on collection development policies and intellectual freedom from Christian libraries. Matacio (2003) shares quantitative research from Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) libraries applicable to other Christian institutions.

Research limitations/implications

The majority of the research on intellectual freedom and Christian librarianship is from 10 or more years ago.

Originality/value

This annotated bibliography is a starting point for research that could be conducted to help in the evaluation of Christian academic library’s collection development policy.
